In 1885, Thomas Carney opened a general store called the Eight Mile House, on Harford Rd. and Joppa Rd., and moved his family there. In 1898, he built another home for his family on Thornewood Ct. located on the hill behind the store. These locations now stand as The Barn Restaurant and a real estate office, respectively.
