History of Middle River

Middle River is an unincorporated community in the county of Baltimore, Maryland. The census-designated place is located at 39.202 degrees north latitude and 76.2626 degrees west longitude. The establishment of Middle River, Maryland, is a little blurry. However, it was recorded that in 1877, a Middle River Train Station appeared on the G.M. Hopkins & Co Baltimore County Map. By 1898, Middle River had already designated a post office and created streets. From the 1930s to 1940s, the town had expanded. During this time, the "Aero Acres" housing community was created to house workers from the Martin Aerospace Company. The community was designed by the architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. It had 600 gable-roofed Cape Cod homes that featured large commercial-style windows. Continue reading to learn more about Essex.

Glenn L. Martin Company

Established in 1917, the Glenn L. Martin Company, or The Martin Company, was an American aerospace and aircraft manufacturing company. It was founded by aviation pioneer Glenn L. Martin and operated until 1961. The Glenn L. Martin Company produced many of the important aircraft used during World War II and the Cold War. The company moved into the guided missiles, space utilization and space exploration industries in the 1950s and 1960s. In 1961, the Martin Company merged with American-Marietta Corporation and formed the Martin Marietta Corporation. In March 1955, that company merged with aerospace giant Lockheed and formed the Lockheed Martin Corporation. The Lockheed Martin Corporation is currently headquartered in North Bethesda, Maryland. It is one of the largest companies in the aerospace, military support, security and technologies industry. As of 2020, the company employs over 110,000 people worldwide.

Martin State Airport

Located 10 miles east of the central business district of Baltimore, the Martin State Airport is a joint civil-military public-use airport in Middle River, MD. Operated by the Maryland Aviation Administration, Martin State Airport is used as a general aviation relief airport. In the 1920s through the 1960s, this airport was used as a plant airport and military aircraft production center for the Glenn L. Martin Company.  Old seaplane ramps and the Glenn L. Martin Maryland Aviation Museum are currently found at the southeast corner of the airport.

Glenn L. Martin Maryland Aviation Museum

The Glenn L. Martin Maryland Aviation Museum showcased over 100 years of Maryland's aviation history. The museum features exhibits, artifacts, archival materials and aircraft displays. Sometimes the museum would hold open cockpit days to let visitors see what it's like being inside a cockpit. Most of the aircraft on display are loaned from the Navy and Army. The Martin 4-0-4 is the only one that was donated to the museum in 1999. Opened on Wednesday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Glenn L. Martin Maryland Aviation Museum only cost $5 to enter. Private tours on any other day can also be arranged ahead of time.
