Westphalia is a census-designated place (CDP) in Prince George's County, Maryland. A suburb of Washington, D.C., it is bordered by the Capital Beltway and the community of Forestville to the west, Maryland Route 4 and the communities of Queensland, Rosaryville and Melwood to the south, Largo to the north, Brock Hall to the northeast, Marlboro Village to the east, and Andrews Air Force Base to the southwest.

There is a total of 9,944 people living in Westphalia. The neighborhood offers its liberal residents a suburban rural mix feel. About 91% of the residents own their homes. Home values in the area average around $360,400. The median rent price is $1,734.

The homes in Westphalia are served by the Prince George's County Public Schools District. Families with children in the area are zoned to Arrowhead Elementary School, Barack Obama Elementary School, Kettering Middle School, James Madison Middle School, Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr. High School, and Largo High School.

Arrowhead Elementary School

Serving pre-Kindergarten to fifth grade, Arrowhead Elementary School is one of the schools located in the Westphalia area. The school has a population of 404 students and a student-to-teacher ratio of 11 to 1. Arrowhead Elementary is made up of 52% male students and 48% female students. The school's enrollment consists of 77% economically disadvantaged students. It has a GreatSchools rating of a 2 out of 10 and an overall Niche grade of a C.

Barack Obama Elementary School

The other elementary school in Westphalia, Barack Obama Elementary School, was the first school to be named after the former president. The name was approved by the Prince George's County school board on June 25, 2009. It was later open on August 23, 2010. Built for 792 students, the elementary school was designed by Grimm + Parker Architects and cost $25 million. Serving grades pre-Kindergarten to fifth, the school has a student population of 766. 98% of the enrollment consists of minority students.

There is a student-to-teacher ratio of 18 to 1. Based on state test scores, 32% of the students are proficient in reading and 18% are proficient in math. Barack Obama Elementary School has an overall Niche grade of a C and a GreatSchools rating of a 4 out of 10.

Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr. High School

Costing $92 million, the 55-acre Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr. High School is located on Brooke Ln. next to Barack Obama Elementary School. It was named after the first African American doctor admitted to practice at Prince George's Hospital. Founded in 2006, the campus offers three computer labs, three lecture halls, a dance room, an auxiliary gym, a fitness room, a black box theater, a performing arts center, a vocal music room, and a greenhouse. It also has the largest gymnasium out of all the non-university schools in the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area.

Serving grades ninth to 12th, the high school has a population of 2,295 students. The student-to-teacher ratio is 17 to 1. Based on state test scores, 28% of the students are at least proficient in reading and 14% are in math. Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr. High School is ranked 171st in Maryland. It also has a GreatSchools rating of a 3 out of 10 and an overall Niche grade of C minus.

Westphalia Community Center

Operated by the Prince George's County Department of Parks and Recreation, Westphalia Community Center caters to the residents of Westphalia and Little Washington. It is situated on Westphalia Rd. and is open Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 9.m. On Fridays, the community center is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. On Saturdays, it is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. On Sundays, it is open from noon to 4 p.m.

Amenities featured at the 16,223-square foot community center are a community lounge, fitness room, multipurpose room, NFL play 60 obstacle course,  playground, basketball court, tennis, concourse and reception area, gymnasium and teen lounge. On Fridays and Saturdays from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Westphalia Community Center also offers the Xtreme Teens program.
