Another form of education in Fairwood, MD, is the Freeway Aviation Training Center at Freeway Airport. Since its opening in 1961, the flight school has been in operation to give FAA-approved ground school classes and training for mostly all single-engine airplane certificates and ratings. The Freeway Airport is located near Bowie, MD, right off Route 50 on Church Rd. It is opened daily from dawn to dusk. Aircraft can park, land, or refuel at Freeway Airport. Qualified visitors can also rent some of the aircraft at the site: 4 Cessna 172P Skyhawks and 1 Piper PA-28R-200 Arrow. Hani Hanjour, one of the hijackers in the September 11 attacks, attempted to rent an aircraft there a month before the attack.
Fairwood Park is a community park located right off of Fairwood Pkwy. in Fairwood, Maryland. The parks consist of recreational amenities like playgrounds, swings, a sandbox area, soccer fields, and a paved trail for walking and jogging. The playgrounds are split up into two types – one for toddlers and one for older children. The playground for older children has a rock wall, rock formations, climbing tubes and climbing ropes. Fairwood Park also has a gazebo with picnic tables and grills for social gatherings and an amphitheater to host concerts.
